Dental Caries Flashcards
What can the treatment be for dental caries
- simple restoration
- replacement restoration
- root canal therapy
- extraction
What does the treatment for dental caries depend on
- signs and symptoms
- damage done
- patient preferences
- cost
- time
How common is dental caries
The most common human disease
What is the definition of dental caries
A plaque related disease, dependent on the presence of simple sugars in the diet, driven by frequency of eating simple carbohydrates, modified by flouride, salivary flow and composition of saliva
What causes dental caries
- tooth
- plaque
- time
- sugar
What are some examples of plaque traps
- pit and fissure
- interproximal
- smooth surfaces
- root surface
Where does plaque form
Iatrogenic
- around margins of restorations
- plastic restorations
- crowns/ bridges/ inlays/ onlays
- around braces
- around removable partial dentures
What can we do to prevent plaque formation
- reduce intake of sugars
- remove the plaque regularly
- increase exposure to flouride
- tip balance towards remineralisation
What is a primary caries
- coronal
- classification by site
- active/ arrested /remineralised
- root
What is secondary caries
- coronal
- root
What does coronal mean
Caries reaching the inner quarter of dentine radiographically and bacteria are largely contained to the dentine
What can be used to detect caries
Radiographs
