Bacterial Growth 2 Flashcards
What is non selective agar used for
Non selective agar grows many different bacteria and will provide a broad overview of what bacteria is present
What is selective agar used for
Makes it easier to identify certain bacteria
You can select for a particular pathogen
What type of agar is commonly used in selective agar
Mannitol-Salt agar
What type of bacteria would produce a yellow colour in selective agar
Staphylococcus aureus
What bacteria would produce a pink colour on a selective agar
Staphylococcus epidermis
Why is the gram stain reaction important
Gives insight into some basic pathology linked to the cell wall, important because it gives insight into the classification and diseases linked to particular classes also what type of antibiotics will work against the bacteria
What colour will gram positive stain
Purple colour
They have larger cell wall from maintaining integrity
What are the targets for antibiotics in gram positive bacteria
Proteins that compose the chains
What colour would gram negative stain
Usually stained red or pink
What is the difference between gram positive and gram negative bacteria
Gram negative bacteria are surrounded by a thin peptidoglycan cell wall which is surrounded by an outer membrane
Gram positive lack an outer membrane but are surrounded by layers of peptidoglycan many times thicker than is found in gram negatives
What are exotoxins
Proteins produced inside the cell and excreted outwards
What are exotoxins produced by
Gram positive and gram negative bacteria
What are endotoxins
Compromised fragments of bacterial cell walls
Produced by gram negative
What is lipolysaccharide
Endotoxin
Causes signals and symptoms of severe systemic disease
What causes sepsis
Lipopolysaccharide
