Bacterial Growth 1 Flashcards
Explain a prokaryotic cell
Consists of chromosome, cell wall and cell membrane
No nucleus
What is the function of the cell wall
Provides tensile strength and protection against mechanical and osmotic stress
What is the function of the cell membrane
Regulates the transport of materials entering and leaving the cell
What is the function of chromosomes in cells
Allow DNA to be accurately copied during these cell divisions
What is a eukaryotic cell
Cells of living organisms
Consist of chromosomes, cell membrane, nucleolus, nucleus, nuclear membrane and internal membrane
What is the difference in size in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotic 10 micro metres
Eurkartyotic 100 micro metres
What microorganisms are associated with caries
S mutans, lactobacilli and bifido bacteria
What bacterias are associated with health
S sanguins and S gordonni
What are virulence factors
The molecules that assist the bacterium colonise the host at the cellular level
Name a surface associate virulence factor
Pili (hair) - used in adhesion can be anti phagocytic
Why is knowldge of bacterial growth kinetics important
Important for infection prevention and control because if bacteria is left for even a short period of time it can multiply rapidly under the correct conditions
What is a colony of bacteria
Millions and millions of bacteria
What are selective agars used for clinically
Selective agars help identify different types of bacteria
Can be used to see which bacteria is causing disease
What are capnophiles
Bacteria that thrive in the presence of CO2
Describe fucultative bacteria
Can survive with or without oxygen
