Chapter 9 suctioning Flashcards
suctioning
the method of using vacuum device to remove such materials
suctioning devices
- mounted suction systems
- portable suction units
- techniques of suctioning
-units must have a suction amount of 30 liters per min and 300 mmhg
portable suction units
usually installed near the patient compartment, and near head of the patient stretcher.
- oxygen, air powered, battery powered or manual powered
- suction amount for portable (30 liters per min, 300 mm hg)
tubing, tips, and catheters
to operate equipment, the proper attachments are required.
tubing
suction tips
suction catheters
collection container
container of clean or sterile water
tubing must be_____
- thick walled
- non kinking
- wide bore tubing
to be sure tubing doesn’t collapse, and allow chunks to pass through
Yankauer or rigid tip
most popular type of suction tip
the rigid pharyngeal tip (yankauer, tonsil sucker or tonsil tip)
-has larger bore than flexible catheters
dangers of use
-may stimulate the vagus nerve in the back of the pharynx causing a reduced heart rate
suction catheters
flexible plastic tubes.
- sizing is in “french” (larger the number, larger the diameter of tube)
- usually not large enough to suction vomit, or thick secretions that may kink
- may be passed through a tube like the nasopharyngeal or a endotracheal tube
container of clean sterile water is needed to clean tips
suction time limit
apply suction for no more than 10 seconds to avoid hypoxia and potentially death
the 3 rules during suction
1 - always use infection control while suctioning
2 - limiting suction to 10 min (due to hypoxia)
3 - place tip of suction tip or catheter at furthest suction point, and suction on the way out of cavity
suction is best delivered with patient on side (recovery position)
facial injuries
blood supply to the face is very rich
-blunt and penetrating injuries to the face frequently result in severe swelling or bleeding that may block/partially block an airway
obstructions
many suction units are not sufficient to remove solid objects (teeth, food, other objects)
dental appliances
dentures that are secure should be left in place
be prepared to remove something if it has the chance to become dis lodged and pose a threat to the air way.
