Main function of digestive system
provides the mechanism to digest, break down food into absorbable forms. food enter mouth, then breaks down from chewing. then food passes through the oropharynx then into the esophagus.
- aside from mouth and esophagus, all other digestive organs are located in the abdominal cavity
small intestine
divided into 3 parts
- duodenum
- jejunum
- ileum
continues to break down food and absorbs nutrients through the intestine wall

first part of intestine that leads to the jejunum
jejunum
part of intestine that is between duodenum and ileum
ileum
third part of the intestine
large intestine (colon)
removes water from waste products as they move toward elimination from body (poop)
liver
the liver produces bile which is excited into small intestine to help break down fat.
- detox
- stores sugar
- assists in producing blood products
gallbladder
serves as a storage system for bile from the liver
pancreas
along with creating insulin, it also helps break down protiens/carbs/fat
spleen
- filters blood
- holds blood reserves
