Life span development
looks at physiological and psychosocial changes that occur from birth till death
infant birth - 1 year
- totally dependent on others
- grows to begin walking and developing unique personality
infant physiological
-pulse and respiratory decrease and blood pressure will increase
-weight
doubles by 6 months
triples by 12 months
-head is 25% of total body weight
infant circulation
lungs and circulation change at birth…usually within minutes or hours after birth.
infant airway
shorter, narrower, less state and more easily obstructed than at any other stage
- breathes from nose till at least 4 weeks old
- diaphram breather, so you will see more movement from the chest
infant breast feeding
the child receives certain antibodies from the mother during pregnancy. this protects her from some diseases.
-during breast feeding the infant receives antibodies
Moro reflex
when startled the infant throws their arms out, spreads her fingers and grabs with fingers and arms. (equally)
palmar reflex
grabs at a finger when placed in infants palm
rooting reflex
when infant is touched on cheek the feeding mechanism kicks in. (when hungry)
sucking reflex
when you touch or brush lips of the infant, they begin to suck.
infant sleep
initially 16-18 hours total through out the day & night
-changes to 4-6 hours in the day & 9 - 10 hours at night
Infant growth
growth plates located on the ends of femur and humerus, along with epiphyseal plates near the ends of femur and humerus
- at birth posterior fontenella is still soft but closes in about 2-3 months
- anterior fontenele closes between 9-18 months
signs of dehydration
look at the soft spot on infants head.
- if sunken in, the baby is lacking water and fluids
- if bulging, then the baby should be inspected. (unless baby is crying causing slight bulge)
2 months
- tracks objects with eyes
- recognizes faces
3 months
- moves objects to mouth
- facial expressions (smile, frown)
