syncope
another term for fainting
a brief loss of consciousness with spontaneous recovery
symptoms of syncope
light headed dizziness nausea weakness vision changes sudden pallor (loss of normal skin color) sweating sometimes inconsistent bowel or bladder control
causes of dizziness and syncope
4 categories
- cardiovascular
- hypovolemic
- metabolic
- environmental / toxicological
cardiovascular causes of syncope
can be caused by any alteration of the hearts ability to pump blood through the lungs and body
hypovolemic causes of syncope
low blood or fluid volume can cause dizziness when patient attempt to sit up or stand up.
metabolic and structural causes of syncope
when the causes of syncope is metabolic, then something is wrong with the brain or the structures near the brain.
brain must be functioning to maintain consciousness
environmental and toxicological causes of syncope &
other causes of syncope
alcohol is the most commonly used drug, and when a patient drinks too much it can lead to an altered level of consciousness.
common with carbon monoxide poisoning
hyperventilation
can cause syncope by breathing too hard in turn constricting blood vessels and preventing blood flow to the brain. causing a faint, or dizziness
