Chapter 26 soft tissue trauma Flashcards
Skin, fatty tissues, muscles, blood vessels, connective tissue, membranes, glands, and nerves
make up the soft tissue of the body
what are the soft tissues of the body?
-skin -fatty tissues -muscles -blood vessels -connective tissue -membranes -glands -nerves
largest organ in the body
skin
skin is _____?
the barrier that keeps microorganisms out.
the functions of the skin
-protection barrier/protections from infections ect -water balance regulates the body fluids, and prevents external water from entering . -temperature regulation sweat glands can regulate the temp, and blood vessels can dilate and constrict to either keep heat or release heat from body. -excretion salts, carbon dioxide, and excess water can be released through the skin -shock (impact) absorption layers of fat the insulate the body, and can absorb impact and pressures.
epidermis
outer most layer -no nerves -no blood vessels only certain burns and cold injuries require medical assistance
soft tissue wounds
classified as -open wounds -closed wounds normally from blunt impact, where there is no open pathway from the outside to the injured site. (internal cuts, bruises, internal punctures, or rupture of internal organ)
closed wounds
-contusions (bruise) is the most frequently caused close wound -hematomas are similar to contusions except that they cover a larger area, and have deeper tissue damage. blood under skin can reach up to 1 liter -closed crush injuries are when forces from outside the body are transmitted to internal structures. ruptures of spleen or liver can cause hemorrhage, and damage to hollow organ (stomach, intestine) can cause infection and damage -blast injuries commonly causes the rupture of hollow organs. as the pressure generated by the blast will commonly burst when struck by high pressure.
