Chapter 6: Responses of Lymphocytes to Foreign Antigens Flashcards
What does MHC stand for?
Major Histocompatibility Proteins
What does HLA indicate?
tissue typing
What do MHC’s do?
Distinguish the cells of one person from those of another.
Type of MHC proteins on all nucleated cells.
MHC Class I
Type of MHC proteins only on B cells, macrophages, and other antigen-presenting cells
MHC Class II
What do MHC’s do?
1) Act as carriers to display processed antigenic fragments on the cell surface so that the immune system can see and respond to them.
2) This triggers the macrophages or APCs to secrete cytokines that stimulate T cell proliferation.
Which type of cells are part of innate immunity, kill cells as soon as they encounter them, and target viruses and cancer cells through recognizing their abnormal membranes?
Natural Killer Cells
True or false: Macrophage and T cell stimulation activate natural killer cells and increase their function.
True
True or false: Some Natural Killer cells never bind antibodies.
False; some do, making it easier to attach to and destroy Ab coated cells.
What are the steps of immune response when a foreign Ag enters the body?
1) Recognition of the foreign antigen
2) Proliferation of lymphocytes programmed to respond to this particular antigen (clones)
3) Destruction of the Ag by the lymphocytes that have responded.
