31
Q
  1. True or False: An advantage on elastic tape is that it allows muscles to contract without impeding circulation or neurological function.
A

T

32
Q
  1. What are two ways the application of tape assists in preventing reinjury of the tissues that stabilize joints
A

a. Tape limits range of motion and provides additional stabilization by acting as external ligaments. Additionally, tape enhances the stability of the joint through increasing joint proprioception.

33
Q
  1. Before applying tape, the clinician should always make sure the body part is what?
A

a. Clean, dry, and free of hair

34
Q
  1. As a prophylactic measure, a basketball player is taped for an inversion ankle sprain. Explain the procedure for removing the tape.
    a. The tape should be removed immediately after practice. The tip of the tape cutters should be dipped in a skin lubricant. The tape cutters should follow a path along the body’s natural contours; because the injury is an inversion sprain, the cut should take place on the medial side of the ankle. During cutting, the tape should be lifted up and away from the skin. During the actual removal, the tape should be slowly pulled in the direction of the natural hair growth. Following removal, the skin should be cleansed with tape removal solution and washed with soap and water. After thoroughly drying the area, it would be advantageous to apply a skin moisturizer to prevent dry skin.
A
35
Q
  1. An athlete has sustained a mild thigh contusion. The athlete is instructed to maintain compression on the injury throughout the evening. How should the compression be applied? Why?
A

a. A felt pad of 0.5-in thickness should be placed over the injured site. The wrap is placed on the anterior aspect of the thigh distal to the injury site. It is applied in an upward and lateral direction encircling the thigh. This prevents any edema formation from settling in the distal digits and provides support against gravitational forces. The wrap should be stretched from one-half to one-third of its total elastic capability prior to application. Excessive stretching may constrict circulation, compress superficial nerves, and impair function. Each turn of the wrap should be overlapped by at least one-half of the previous underlying strip.

36
Q
  1. How is Kinesio tape designed to stretch?
A

a. It is designed to allow for longitudinal stretch of 55% to 60% of its resting length but is not designed to stretch horizontally.
