What is skin cancer?
Damage to the DNA by the sun. Cells divide rapidly and unevenly. Found in 3 distinct forms.
What is Actinic Keratosis?
Pink flesh colored precancerous lesions from sun damage. Feel sharp/rough. Should be checked out by derm.
What are the three main types of skin cancer?
•Basal cell carcinoma -
most common/least severe.
Light pearly nodules
•squamous cell carcinoma-
More serious than basal.
Scaly red papules or nodules
Can spread
•malignant melanoma-
most serious, spreads quickly, least common most deadly if untreated
Black or dark patches jagged uneven
What is oncology esthetics?
Medical study of cancer, it’s causes and treatments. Skin more fragile & reactive.
Esthetic Soothing & calming treatments are still beneficial
ABCDE’S of melanoma detection ?
A- assymetry - two sides not identical
B- border - irregular
C-color- dark or more than one color fade into another
D- diameter - pencil eraser size
E- evolving- constantly changing
