Ch.2 Anatomy & Physiology (Cells) Flashcards
What is Anatomy?
Study of the structures of the human body and substances these structures are made of. The science of the interconnected detail of organisms (or their parts)
What is Physiology?
Study of the functions & activities performed by the body structures including physical and chemical processes)
What is Histology?
(Known as microscopic anatomy) study of the structure and composition of tissue.
What is the main focus of an esthetician?
The muscle, bones, nerves and circulation of the head , face, neck, arms and hands.
What is a cell? What is responsible for?
It’s the Basic unit of all living things.(bacteria, plants, animals, humans)
Responsible for carrying on all life processes.
What is protoplasm?
A colorless, jellylike substance in which nutrients such as protein, fats, carbs, mineral salts & water are present which are also necessary for cell growth, reproduction & self-repair
Why are the nutrients present in protoplasm necessary?
For cell growth, reproduction and self-repair.
What is a cell composed of ?
Protoplasm, nucleus, organelles or mitochondria (small organs) & the cell membrane.
What is the nucleus?
Dense active protoplasm in the center of the cell. Important for cell reproduction and metabolism. (Yolk if the egg)
What is the nucleoplasm?
A fluid in the nucleus containing proteins & the acid DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
What is DNA?
Determines our genetic makeup (eyes, hair, skin etc)
What is Mitochondria?
Small floating organelles through the cell that take in nutrients to break down for energy.
What is ATP (adenosine triphosphate)?
The energy used (created by the mitochondria) for metabolism.
What is a neuron?
A nerve cell (transmit nerve impulses)
What is the cell membrane?
The outer part of the cell that encloses the protoplasm. Permits soluble substances to enter and leave. (Think member of security)
