Ch.2 Anatomy & Physiology (Muscular System & Composition) Flashcards
What is the muscular system?
System that Covers, contracts, shapes & supports skeletal tissue. Muscles are Fibrous tissue that stretch and contract according to demands of body movements.
Why is the muscular system important to an esthetician?
Services/treatments such as massage & electrical modalities involve manipulating muscles of the head, face, shoulders, arm and hands. Practicing good posture during services prevents muscle fatigue.
How many muscles in The human body?
Over 630 making up 40% of body weight. 30 of these muscles are facial.
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
1) skeletal or voluntary muscle
(contracts with conscious though)
2) smooth or involuntary muscle
(Not under conscious control)
3) cardiac muscle which are specific to heart function
(Not under conscious control)
Which muscle tissue do estheticians work with?
Skeletal or voluntary Which are muscles attached to bone and controlled by thought process. Nerve impulses trigger muscle which contracts, moving the bone or joint associated.
Name and describe the 3 parts of a skeletal or voluntary muscle?
1) origin- fixed part closest to skeleton. Stationary
2)belly- middle part
3)insertion- movable attachment. Farthest from skeleton.
Pressure in massage is directed in what direction?
Insertion to origin
By what methods can you positively influence muscle tissue?
•massage- hand/mechanical
•electrical therapy current
•light rays- LED
•Dry heat- Heat lamps/caps
•Moist heat- towels, steam
