Ch.11 Hair Removal Flashcards
What is the most common method of hair removal?
Waxing
What is trichology?
The scientific study of hair and its deseases
What is a hair follicle ?
A mass of epidermal cells creating a tube or canal that extends deep into the dermis.
What includes the hair ROOT, BULB, PAPILLA, SHAFT, ARRECTOR PILI MUSCLE, AND SEBACEOUS GLANDS?
Pilosebaceus UNIT
What happens in the hair matrix?
Cell mitosis (divisions)
What are the 3 layers of the hair shaft?
•Cuticle (outermost layer)= HARD keratin
•Cortex (middle)= HARD keratin
•Medulla (center or innermost)= SOFT keratin
What are the three types of hair?
•Lanugo- Soft downy hair found on fetus. Sheds after birth & turns into Vellus or terminal hair.
•Vellus- aka peach fuzz. Found in areas not covered by terminal hair. (Women’s cheeks) Removing them can result in terminal hair growth.
•terminal- longer coarse hair found on head , brows, lashes, genitals, arms, legs. With hormonal changes Vellus hairs tend to change to terminal
WHAT ARE THE 3 hair growth PHASES?
ANAGEN- new hair production (most important stage to an esthi in effective hair removal)
CATAGEN- transition stage (mitosis stops and is the shortest part of hair cycle)
TELOGEN- funk or RESTING stage of growth. May sit in the follicle until pushed out by new anagen
Hypertrichosis is:
Excessive hair growth of terminal hair in areas of the body that normally grow Vellus hairs. GENERICALLY & ETHNICALLY INHERITED, NOT STIMULATED BY MALE ANDROGENS.
Hirsutism is:
Excessive hair growth on face, chest, underarms, groin (especially in women). It IS CAUSE BY MALE ANDROGENS IN BLOOD. THIS HORMONE IMBALANCE MAY BE CAUSES BY STIMULATION OF MALE ANDROGENS AT PUBERTY, medication, illness or stress.
1)PATHOLOGICAL condition cause by virus & bacteria with series of signs & symptoms?
2)AN ABNORMALITY of function like birth defect or genetically inherited malfunction?
3)A GROUP OF SYMPTOMS that when combined characterize a desease or disorder?
1) DISEASE
2)DISORDER
3)SYNDROME
What is a DISEASE affecting hair growth?
ACROMEGALY & CUSHING which are medical conditions related to excessive androgen production
DISORDER affecting hair growth?
Adrenogenital syndrome - malfunction of adrenal complex causes over production of androgen
SYNDROMES affecting hair growth?
PCOS - polycystic ovarian syndrome formerly known as Stein-Levanthal syndrome
Achard-Thiers syndrome- combination of Cushing and adrenogenital syndromes
What are two types of TEMPORARY methods of hair removal?
DEPILATION & EPILATION
