ch34 (obstetrics and neonatal care) Flashcards
abruptio placentae
premature separation of the placenta from the wall of the uterus
amniotic sac
fluid-filled, bag like membrane in which the fetus develops
anemic
low red blood cells; decreased ability to transport oxygen throughout the body via bloodstream
Apgar score
scoring system used to assess the status of a newborn
birth canal
vagina and cervix
bloody show
small amount of blood in vagina; appears at the beginning of labor
breech presentation
delivery in which the buttocks come out first
cervix
lower third of the uterus
crowning
fetus’s head at the vaginal opening during labor
eclampsia
pregnancy complication; hypertension and seizure activity
(blurred vision, headache, or protein in the urine)
ectopic pregnancy
pregnancy that develops outside the uterus (usually in Fallopian tube)
embryo
early stage of development after the egg is fertilized (first 10 weeks)
endometrium
lining of the inside of the uterus
fetal alcohol syndrome
characterized by growth and physical problems; mental retardation and abnormalities
fetus
the developing unborn infant inside the uterus
(10 weeks until birth)
fundus
dome shaped top of uterus
gestational diabetes
diabetes that develops during pregnancy in women who did not have diabetes before pregnancy
gestational hypertension
blood pressure > 140/90 mmHg in a pregnant female who did not have hypertension before pregnancy
induced abortion
elective termination of a pregnancy priori to the time of viability
lightening
movement of fetus down into the pelvis late in pregnancy
limb presentation
delivery in which the presenting part is a single arm or leg
meconium
fetal stool; can indicate stress/disease in a newborn
menarche
first menstrual cycle in females
menopause
cessation of menstruation (4th-5th decade of life)
miscarriage
spontaneous passage of the fetus and placenta before 20 weeks (spontaneous abortion)
multigravida
woman who has had previous pregnanciese
nuchal cord
umbilical cord that is wrapped around the fetus’s neck
perineum
area of skin between the vagina and anus
placenta
tissue attached to the uterine wall that nourishes the fetus through the umbilical cord
placenta previa
condition in which the placenta develops over and covers the cervix
preeclampsia
pregnancy complication causes hypertension; lack of seizure activity
(blurred vision, headache, protein in urine)
presentation
position in which an infant is born (part of the body that appears first)
primigravida
woman who is experiencing her first pregnancy
prolapsed of the umbilical cord
umbilical cord comes out of the vagina before the fetus
spina bifida
developmental defect; portion of the spinal cord may protrude outside of the vertebrae or body
spontaneous abortion
loss of a pregnancy priori to 20 weeks of gestation (miscarriage)
supine hypotensive syndrome
low blood pressure from compression of inferior vena cava by the weight of the pregnant uterus when the woman is supine
term gestation
pregnancy that has reached full term (39-40 weeks)
umbilical cord
connects the pregnant woman to the fetus via the placenta; 2 arteries and one vein
vernix caseosa
white, cheesy substance that covers the body of the fetus
vertex presentation
delivery where the head of the newborn comes out first
