when you follow the pathway of blood in the venous system, where are you following it?
back towards the heart
what do the medial and lateral plantar veins drain into?
the posterior tibial vein
what does the fibular vein follow and what does it connect to?
the fibular artery and connects to the posterior tibial vein
what does the posterior tibial vein connect to superiorly?
the anterior tibial vein
what does the anterior tibial vein drain?
a little bit of the dorsal venous blood on the foot where most of it goes superficial
where does the anterior tibial vein pass above?
the interosseus membrane to cross to the back where it meets the posterior tibial vein and make the popliteal vein
as we move superior to the popliteal vein, what do we get?
the femoral vein
what branches off the femoral vein superiorly?
the deep femoral vein
what does the femoral vein become once it crosses under the inguinal ligament?
the external iliac vein
the dorsal foot veins are going to mostly not drain into the anterior tibial vein. why?
because they are going to drain into the superficial veins (the great saphenous vein
where does the great saphenous vein run?
starts at the medial ankle, runs anterior to the medial malleolus, runs up along the medial leg, past the knee and medial thigh and eventually drain into the femoral vein
is the small saphenous vein superficial or deep?
superficial

what does the small saphenous vein drain?
a bit of the lateral side of the venous network of the foot (top and bottom)
where is the small saphenous vein going to run relative to the lateral malleolus?
posteriorly, along the lateral side of the leg

the popliteal vein which then turns into the femoral vein, etc.
what does the external iliac vein join with to form the common iliac vein?
the internal iliac vein
what do the two, right and left, common iliac veins join to form?
the inferior vena cava
what does the inferior vena cava run right next to?
the abdominal aorta
where does the inferior vena cava run?
up the diaphragm, up towards the heart
what are the parietal/muscular veins draining?
deoxygenated blood from the muscles in the abdominal wall, back into the inferior vena cava
for what reason do we have the hepatic portal circulation?
to check the deoxygenated blood and nutrients from the visceral veins to make sure there is nothing toxic in them before sending them to the heart. (quick filter)
what does hepatic mean?
liver
is the liver a filtration system?

where are we going to check through all of our blood?
through the liver
what does the inferior mesenteric vein drain into?
splenic vein
why is it called the splenic vein?
because it comes from the spleen into the stomach
what does the splenic vein join with?
the superior mesenteric vein
what does the superior mesenteric vein and the splenic vein join to become?
hepatic portal vein
what are the superior mesenteric vein and splenic vein bringing to the hepatic portal vein?
all the blood where they have picked up nutrients from the intestines
what does the hepatic portal vein go into?
the liver
after the liver checks all the blood from the hepatic portal vein, where does the blood go?
its going to travel through two hepatic veins (right and left) into the inferior vena cava, to then go towards the heart
if the inferior vena cava drains straight into the heart, where does the drainage of the upper limbs come from?
the superior vena cava
what major vessels drain the thoracic wall and the organs of the thorax?
- azygos vein (right side)
where does the azygos vein run?
right of the vertebral column along the posterior wall and it drains into the superior vena cava
where does the parietal/muscular veins of the thorax drain into?
azygos vein
what are the two veins that bring blood from the left side of the thoracic wall back towards the azygos vein?
- hemiazygos ( drain rib 8 and below )
- accessory hemiazygos ( drain above rib 8 )
what would be the pathway of drainage from a parietal branch at the level of rib 4 on the left side?
parietal branch –> accessory hemiazygos vein –> azygos vein –> superior vena cava
what is another name for superficial veins?
cutaneous veins
what are the veins on the posterior surface and many on the anterior surface of the hand draining into?
- cephalic vein
- basilic vein
where is the cephalic vein running?
laterally in the arm and forearm, crossing at the elbow anteriorly. running between the deltoid(deep to delt) and the pectoralis major (superficial to pec)
where does the cephalic vein drain into?
the axillary vein
is the axillary vein superficial or deep?
deep
is the basilic vein superficial or deep?

where is the basilic vein?
runs medially on the forearm and arm
where does the basilic vein drain into?
the axillary vein
what does the median cubital vein do?
it connects the cephalic vein laterally with the basilic vein medially on the anterior surface of the elbow joint
is the median cubital vein superficial or deep?

which vein do you typically get blood taken?
median cubital vein ( good size, superficial, easy to see, easy to access )
do the superficial or deep veins follow the arteries?

what do the radial and ulnar vein combine to form?
the brachial vein
as the brachial vein gets more superficial, what does it turn into?
the axillary vein (at the lower border of teres major, alike the axillary artery)
where does the axillary vein pass?
over rib 1 and under the clavicle to turn into the subclavian vein
when the dural folds form, what do they create?
little openings for the venous sinuses (venous drainage around the brain is there)
where does the superior sagittal sinus run?
right along the top of the brain
are all of the venous sinuses outside or inside the skull?
inside
what does the inferior sagittal sinus follow?
the straight sinus
where does the inferior sagittal sinus and the straight sinus connect?
at the back of the brain
where does the transverse sinuses go?
internal jugular vein
where does the internal jugular vein go?
down towards the superior vena cava
all of the venous sinus branches are draining?
the interior of the skull (brain and other things on the inside of the skull)
where does all the venous sinus branches bring back blood?
to the internal jugular vein
where do the superior sagittal sinus, inferior sagittal sinus and the straight sinus all go?
towards the transverse sinus
what does the maxillary vein run with?
the maxillary artery
we have a number of veins that drain the face and scalp, where do they drain into?
into the external jugular vein
- however: SOME goes into the internal jugular vein
what does the maxillary vein drain?
the face and the temporomandibular joint area on the external of the skull
where does the maxillary vein drain into?
the external jugular vein
do we get a bit of venous drainage of the external skull into the internal jugular vein?

where does the superficial temporal vein drain into?

the subclavian vein
where does the subclavian vein drain into?
the subclavian vein
where does the internal jugular vein go into?
joins with the subclavian vein to form the brachiocephalic vein
in the arterial system around the clavicle/brachiocephalic area, it is different from the left and right. is it the same way in the venous system?
no. they are identical left and right
on each side of the body, the internal jugular vein and the subclavian vein join together to form what? which then joins together to form what?
they each form a brachiocephalic vein, which then join together to form the superior vena cava
where does the superior vena cava drain into?
the right atrium
where are the internal jugular, subclavian and brachiocephalic veins in relation to the arch of the aorta and its branches?
the veins are anterior to the aorta and its branches
