Campylobacter Flashcards
Vibrio cholera
Get from drinking contaminated water and enterotoxin causes diarrhea and death from dehydration
Vibrio Parahaemyliticus
Foodborn gastroenteritis that you can get from sushi because it grows in high salt conditions found in marine fish
Vibrio vulnificus
Get from salt water fish because it is a halophile. Can get gastroenteritis as well as flesh eating bacteria when they get in wounds and spread really fast
Thermophilic campylobacter
Jejuni, coli, lari
Campylobacteriosis
In cattle caused by feotus sbs venereal
-Get through venereal transmission and through endotoxin causes endometritis and embryonic death and rarely abortion. This leads to a prolonged estrus and reduced conception rates for breeders. Animals usually develop immunity and clear infection on their own
Treatment of Campylobacteriosis
Tetracyclines (in feed or injection)
Vaccine for campylobacteriosis
Self limiting infection
-Bacterin: vaccinate twice 30 days before breeding
C. fetus ss fetus
Get rom ingestion and carried to intestines and gall bladder causes abortion in sheep and cows which is often cyclic. Gets into the blood and then the placenta. Causes edematous cotyledons and focal areas of necrosis in the fetal liver
Treatment and vaccines for C. fetus ss fetus
-Tetracycline and chlortetracyclines to eliminate carriers
-Serospecific bacterins prior to outbreak
C. jejuni and coli
Self limiting infections causing enteritis, abortion, and mastitis. Major virulence comes from enterotoxins and cytotoxin
C. hepaticus
Spotty liver disease in chickens raised on floors. no vaccine, drop in egg production
Campylobacteriosis in humans
Gastroenteritis from C. jejuni or coli (pigs). One of the top two foodborne pathogens in US. Get commonly from dairy and chicken
