Brachyspira Flashcards
Brachyspira
Spiral shaped anaerobic
Pathogenic Brachyspira
-Hyodynteriae
-Hampsonii
-Pilosicoli
Hemolytic
Yes strong hemolysis except for pilosicoli
Diseases they cause
Swine dysentery and porcine colonic spirochetosis
Habitat of B. hyodysenteriae
Intestinal tract of swine and wild rats and mice
Antigenic characteristics of B. hyodysenteriae
Based on LPS antigen
Mode of infection of B. hyodysenteriae
Ingestion
Virulence factors of B. hyodysenteriae
-Hemolysin
-LPS
-Flagella
Pathogenesis of B. hyodysenteriae
-Enters colons and invades goblet cells
-Multiplies in crypts
-Stimulate mucus production
-Mucoheorrhagic colitis
Clinical signs of swine dysentery
-Fever
-Water bloody mucus diarrhea
-Abdominal pain
-Dehydration
-Chronic: persistnet diarrhea with dark feces
lesions of dysentery
In large intestine
-Mucosa coverd in mucofibrinous exudate with blood
-Swollen mesenteric lymph nodes
Diagnosis
- Clinical signs/ spiral organisms from isolation
- PCR or fluoroescent antibody
- Dark-field or phase contrast
- Fluorescent in situ hybridization
Treatment
ANtibiotics in feed or water
-Lincomycin
-Tylosin
-Tiamulin
-Carbadox
-Virginiamycin
-AST testing beneficial
Control measures
- Antimicrobial feed additives
- Depopulation and sanitation
- Restock with non infected pigs
- Can try autogenous vaccine but not proven
