Self-presentation aka impression management
Process of splaying oneself to society through culturally accepted behaviors
models for how we express emotion in social situations
Basic model, Appraisal model and Social construction model
Basic model
There are universal emotions, along with corresponding expression that can be understood across cultures
Social construction model
emotions are solely based on the situational context of social interactions, no biological basis
Appraisal model
accepts that there are biologically predetermined expressions once an emotion is experienced, but that there is a cognitive antecedent to emotional expression
Display rules
unspoken rules that govern the expression of emotion; cultural expectations of emotions
Culture syndrome
shared set of beliefs, norms, values, and behaviors organized around a central theme, as is found among people sharing the same lang and geography
Impression management
the maintenance of a public image aka self-presentation

Dramaturgical approach
Indiv create images of themselves in the same way that actors perform a role in front of an audience - by Erving Goffman.
- Front stage - where the indiv is seen by the audience and strives to preserve his desired image
- Back stage - where the indiv is not in front of an audience and is free to act outside of his desired image
George Mead - theory of self
dependent on social interaction, outlining the 2 parts of the self as the “I” and the “me:
I = the creative expression of the indiv
Me = part of the self that is a response to the enviro
Communication
ability to convey info by speech, writing, signals, or behavior; foundation of social interaction; effective communication happens when the desired message is received by the recipient.
Theres verbal and nonverbal communication
Animal communication
takes place btwn nonhuman animals AND btwn humans and other animals as well.
Use body lang, rudimentary facial expressions, visual displays, scents, and vocalizations to communicate
