Social interaction
the basis of social life and helps humans reach their full potential
status
a position in society used to classify individuals, they exist in relation to other statuses
Three types of statues
Ascribed status
Achieved status
Master status
Ascribed status
involuntarily assigned to an indiv based on race, ethnicity, gender, fam background, and so on
Achieved status
voluntarily earned by an indiv as results of one’s efforts and choices
Master status

Roles
a set of beliefs, values, and norms that define the expectations of a certain status in a social situation
Role performance
- carrying out the behaviors of a given role
- Indiv can vary in how successful they are at performing a role
- Can change depending on the social situation and context of the interaction
Role partner
The person w/ whom one interacts while playing a particular role; each role partner provides a diff set of behavioral expectations
Role set
contains all of the diff roles associated w/ a status
Role conflict
when one has difficulty in satisfying the requirements of multiple roles simultaneously
Role strain
when one has difficulty satisfying requirements of the same role simultaneously
Role exit
Dropping of one identity for another
Groups (aka social groups)
made up of 2 or > indiv w/ similar characteristics that share a sense of unity, not just simply indiv that share the same physical space
Types of groups
- Peer group
- Fam group
- In-group
- Out-group
- Reference group
- Primary groups
- Secondary groups
Gemeinschaft (community)
group unified by feelings of togetherness due to shared beliefs, ancestry, or geography
Gesellschaft (society)
group unified by mutual self-interests in achieving a goal
Interaction process analysis
Technique for observing, classifying, and measuring the interactions w/in small groups
system for multiple level observation of groups (SYMLOG)
based on the belief that there are 3 fundamental dimensions of interaction: dominance vs submission, friendliness vs unfriendliness, and instrumentally controlled vs emotionally expressive
Group conformity
Individuals are compliant w/ the groups goals, even when the group’s goals may be in direct contrast to the indiv’s goal.
Network
an observable pattern of social relationships btwn indiv or groups
Network redundancy
Overlapping connections w/ the same indiv
Immediate networks
Dense/strong ties, may be composed of friends
Distant networks
loose/ weaker ties, may include acquaintances
Organization
bodies of ppl w/ a structure and culture designed to achieve specific goals. They exist outside of each indiv membership w/in the organization
Formal organizations
NOT the same as groups
They continue despite the departure of an indiv member
Have expressed goals
Have enforcement procedures that seek to control the activities of their members
Characterized by the hierarchical allotment of formal roles or duties to members
They can be LARGE
Characteristic institution
The social structure or institution about which societies are organized
bureaucracy
A rational sys of political org, admin, discipline and control.
Iron law of oligarchy
States that democratic or bureaucratic sys naturally shift to being ruled by an elite group.
McDonaldization
Used to refer to a shift in focus toward efficiency, predictability, calculability, and control in societies
