5.2 Emotion Flashcards
HIGH YIELD
Emotion
a state of mind, or feeling, that is subjectively experienced based on circumstances, mood, and relationships.
Three Elements of Emotion
- Cognitive
- Behavioral
- Physiological
The 7 universal emotions
- happiness
- sadness
- contempt
- surprise
- fear
- disgust
- anger
James-Lange theory of emotion
nervous sys arousal leads to a cognitive response in which the emotion is labeled
Cannon-Bard theory of emotion
the simultaneous arousal of the nervous sys and cognitive response lead to action
Schachter-Singer theory [aka cognitive arousal theory OR two-factor theory]
- nervous sys arousal and interpretation of context lead to a cognitive response
- Both arousal and the labeling of arousal based on enviro must occur in order for an emotion to be experienced
Cognitive appraisal
to feel an emotion, one must consciously analyze the enviro in relation to nervous sys arousal
limbic sys
the primary nervous sys component involved in experiencing emotion and motivation
Parts of the Limbic system
- Amygdala
- Thalamus
- Hypothalamus
- Hippocampus
explicit memory sys (hippocampus)
Aka the conscious memory, is the memory of experiencing the actual emotion. These are episodic memories and are considered memories about emotions than stored emotions. Produces a conscious memory of the experience
implicit memory sys (amygdala)
The unconscious memory aka emotional memory. This is the storage of the actual feelings of emotion associated w/ an event. When experiencing a similar event later on, emotions may be retrieved. Determines the expression of past emotions
Ability to distinguish and interest facial expressions is controlled by
- the temporal lobe and some input from the occipital lobe
- R hemisphere is more active
Prefrontal cortex
- involved w/ planning, expressing personality, and making decisions.
- Located in the anterior portion of the frontal lobe
- Receives arousal input from the brainstem, coordinating arousal and cognitive states
- L prefrontal cortex = pos emotions; R prefrontal cortex = neg emotions
dorsal prefrontal cortex
associated with attention and cognition
ventral prefrontal cortex
critical for experiencing emotion
