A
- initial rxn to a stressor and the activation of the sympathetic nervous sys
- Hypothalamus stimulates the pituitary to secrete ACTH which stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol
- Hypothalamus also activates the adrenal medulla

Resistance
A
continuous release of hormones allows the sympathetic nervous sys to remain engaged to fight the stressor

Exhaustion
A
- body can no longer maintain an elevated response w/ sympathetic nervous sys activity
- At this point, Indi become susceptible to illness and medical conditions, organ sys can begin to deteriorate and in some cases death
