Culture
the lifestyle of a group of people and includes both material and symbolic elements
Ethnography
the study of cultures and customs
Ethnographic methods
experimental methods used to study the ethnicity or culture of a group
Material culture
inc the artifacts (objects) one associates w/ a given group, such as artwork, emblems, clothing, jewelry, foods, buildings, and tools
Symbolic culture aka nonmaterial culture
inc the ideas associated w/ a cultural group, such as mottos, songs or catchphrases
Cultural lag
the idea that material culture changes more quickly than symbolic culture
Cultural barrier
social difference that impedes interaction
Language
- consists of spoken or written symbols combined into a sys and governed by rules
- Critically important in the transmission of culture
Values
what a person deems important in life
Belief
something a person considers to be true
Ritual
a formalized ceremonial behavior in which members of a group or community regularly engage.
Norms
societal rules that define the boundaries of acceptable behavior; they exist for behavior, speech, dress, home life, etc
