There’s different severity and levels of impairment
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
When a child is unable to maintain attention span. They can have hyperactive or inattentive type.
Problems occur at home and at school and it is associated with a learning disability. Children are unable to process how information is taught
Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Learning Disabilities:
Consider psychological testing with a psychologist (they can differentiate ADHD vs learning disability). Childhood disorders testing should be done so they can differentiate the problem from a learning disability
Separation from primary caregiver and worry about them
Separation Anxiety Disorder
A disorder diagnosed in children when a shift after recent stressor and behavior recently changes in a 6-week period (if less, provide psycho-education). Children have anxiety about lots of different things and it disrupts their sleep
Symptoms present for at least 6-months
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
When a child relives a stressful event (frozen watchfulness, stiffness, jumps to sounds, or re-enacts through play)
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Common Interventions and Modalities:
Play therapy is very important with children
Psychoeducation is important for parents
A SW should collaborate with parents and teachers by getting a release to talk to school to find out specific problems
Use of Medications:
ADHD is commonly used with medications in children
If it is not ADHD, then first focus on modifying environment and identifying stressors in their environment
