32. Consent for Treatment Flashcards
Legal and Ethical Importance:
A SW needs consent for treatment for all clients so they are informed what the nature of therapy is, the costs, purpose, SW’s background, risks, benefits, and the limits to confidentiality
Involuntary Clients:
Involuntary clients are those in a mental health state, risk to others, or court mandated clients. A SW should honor and respect their resistance
If client is a danger to themselves or others, they would need higher level care such as involuntary hospitalization (51/50)
Risks of Therapy:
Clients have the right to refuse treatment (if they are not court mandated)
Make sure the client is competent to consent for treatment (doesn’t have Alzheimer’s, parents of minors, and in the language of client)
