41. Group Treatment Flashcards
Stage where the group is just starting to come together and is characterized with anxiety and uncertainty
Group members are cautious with their behavior, which is driven by the desire to be accepted by all members of the group
Forming
Stage where group member conflict and competition are at its greatest. This is because group members now have an understanding of the task and have a general feel for who they are as a group and who group members are
They feel confident and begin to address some of the more important issues surrounding the group
Storming
Stage where the group becomes a cohesive unit and morale is high as group members actively acknowledge the talents, skills, and experience that each member brings to the group
After going through conflict, they come out stronger and open up to each other based on deeper level of trust
Norming
The group is ready to begin performing its respective task and assigned jobs
The group has become well acquainted with one another and has clarity with regard to what needs to and has to be done. The stage begins when the group is comfortable to work and ends when the job is completed
Performing
Stage where it ends the process of group formation because the group is adjourned once the task that is assigned to the group is completed
Adjourning
Common Problems and Barriers in Group Treatment:
Includes court mandated clients (may be reluctant in sharing things and confidentiality) and inappropriate clients (someone with antisocial personality disorder or drug and alcohol problem)
If a SW determines someone is not appropriate for group, SW should not bring it up during the group and instead discuss during individual session (unless it impacts the whole group such as someone sharing information about others or something in the group)
A SW should not address the client individually if it is related to the group, they should use the group as a tool and how it impacts other group members. If an issue arises (such as a client continues to be late), then SW should address client directly as opposed to doing it with the whole group
