35. Boundaries Flashcards
Boundaries:
A SW has the responsibility to maintain a definition of relationship with clients. It is important to know expectations and times they will be seen, especially outside hours
For borderline personality clients, must have strong boundaries
Addressing Issues:
If a SW becomes aware of a dual relationship, SW should bring it up during a session and talk about it in case they see each other at an event. If it hasn’t been addressed, let the client take the lead and see if they approach you
For gift giving or receiving there is no definite rule, but discuss meaning of gift with client and its value (a sports tickets is not acceptable)
If a gift is accepted or not, think of how it will impact the relationship to avoid odd situations, unless it is a culturally accepted situation
Avoiding Dual Relationships:
A SW must avoid dual relationships (do not become friends with them or form romantic relationships) as it becomes confusing and can cause harm
If a SW knows in advance about a dual relationship, do not start therapy with the client, refer them elsewhere
