4. Suicide and Self Harm Flashcards
Risk Factors:
Expression of hopelessness, recent loss (significant person or excessive drinking), depression, shamefulness, lost a job, do not want to be around others, and heavy feelings of occurring experience
First, always assess and ask if they have thoughts of hurting themselves. By asking this, it determines the severity of client’s risk
Assessment:
Specifically ask if they want to hurt themselves and if they have a plan. If they do not, then talk about feelings and how to cope
If they do have a plan, find out if they have the means (pill overdose)? If a client has a plan to harm themselves, then considered a 51/50 (involuntary hospitalization)
Remember, a SW does not admit a client into hospital, the hospital will determine client’s severity. However, do not let the client go home alone until their stabilized
Interventions:
Interventions depend on the professional-client relationship
If a client is vague and reassures the therapist they won’t hurt themselves, then SW can have them sign a no harm contract, increase contacts, and create a plan to help if feelings get worse (this is done by keeping them safe and meeting the client where they are at)
