When to Terminate:
What determines termination is if a client met their treatment goals or when they no longer present symptoms of a problem
Clients can be reluctant to terminate due to regression (this is normal), but this alone is not enough to not terminate for proper closure
How to Terminate:
Always good to have a termination plan (can be determined at initial stage), make it clear that once a goal is resolved then termination will occur (best when it occurs gradually)
Common Client Responses:
Clients may feel sad or anxious during this stage and think they can’t do it without the SW
Also, if a crisis happens during the termination stage, the SW should postpone termination during a crisis phase so that they do not lose support
