for the penalties
NACH
need to achieve
NAF
need to avoid failure
NACH characteristics
- need to achieve
- welcome competition
- take risks
- welcome feedback
- like a challenge
- task persistent
- confident
What does task persistent mean
Task persistence is defined as the continuation of activity in the face of difficulty, obstacles, and/or failure
NAF characteristics
- need to avoid failure
- avoid competition
- take easy option
- give up easily
- do not like feedback or evaluation

What does approach behabiour depend on
The interaction of personality and the situation
Factors in personality which determines NACH or NAF
- introvert, extrovert
- confidence
- innate or developed
- aggression, arousal, ansxiety
Situations which determine NAF or NACH
- probability of success
- incentive value, high or low
- familiar or unfamiliar environment
- high risk = high reward
Probability of success
High chance of success leads to high motivation, low chance people may give up, lack motivation
Incentive value
Reward gained from the task, high value reward leads to high motivation, low value then people give up, lack motivation
How to develop the need to achieve
- attribute success internally (tell player success is due to them)
- use reinforcement (praise for meeting goals will maintain motivation
- set realistic goals (motivation to achieve satisfaction)
- allow success at training to them maintain motivation
