Attitude
A value aimed at an object
Where are attitudes from
Formed from associating with others and picking up their opinions and values (socialisation)
Who do we tend to pick up attitudes from
Significant others: friends, family, role model. Also more likely to pick up values that are reinforced or repeated many times
What are the 3 components of attitude (Triadic model)
Cognitive part, affective part, behavioural part
What is the cognitive part of the attitude
Simply, what you think, represents your beliefs
What is the affective part of the attitude
The concerns, feelings and emotions of the player
What is the behavioural part of the attitude
Reflects what you do. Shown by actions and habits of the performer. For example turning up to all trainings
What are the 2 concepts used to change attitudes
- cognitive dissonance
- persuasive communication
What is cognitive dissonance
The coach attempting to put pressure to the performers components so the performer becomes uneasy and motivated to change their existing attitudes
Dissonance
Create a conflict / lack of harms giving an uneasy feeling
An example of cognitive dissonance
A player may be presented with new information/ presented with a new form of activity so they can question their current attitude and be motivated to change it
What is persuasive communication
It is a process of talking to an athlete to change their attitudes
Why is persuasive communication hard
Because it is very difficult to change stable environments so talking to change is very difficult
Who does the communication have to come from
Has to come from a high status role model and it has to be important and understood. Also, the timing it is given has to be important
