- keeps player on track
- means that they are persistent and consistent in giving their best every game

Chants coming from the crowd supporting and encouraging you
Example of tangible rewards
Certificates or trophies
Example of intangible rewards
Praise and encouragement or applause from the crowd
Reasons why extrinsic rewards are bad
- overuse may lead to loss in value and incentive
- it will become the norm
- may lead to pressure put on the players
- can undermine the intrinsic reason for playing, just playing for the reward
Reason why intrinsic motivation is better
Stronger and it lasts longer
Examples of how the coach can maintain intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
- player of the week award
- making sessions fun and enjoyable
- pointing out health benefits of task
- pointing out role models
- give praise
- setting goals or targets
- use feedback to inspire and correct errors
