1
Q

What is the human nervous system

A
  • made up of the brain + spinal cord
  • enables bodily reactions when surroundings alter
-stimuli picked up by sense organs.

Q

Name the 4 sense organs + their features

A

Eyes — sensitive to light and movement
Ears — sensitive to sound / balance
Nose / tongue — sensitive to chemicals for taste + smell
Skin — sensitive to touch, pressure, temperature and pain.

Q

Name the two effectors and their features/ purposes

A

Muscles — these contract or get shorter, for example muscles in an arm contract and pull away from a hot radiator
Glands — produce / release hormones into the blood stream, for example, salivary glands respond to stimulus by secreting saliva.

Q

What are myelin sheaths?

A

They surround the main body of the neuronal cells (in neurones) which are a fatty layer acting as an insulator.

14
Q

Which are quicker, reflex actions or actions in the central nervous system? And why?

A

Reflex actions are faster as they enable our bodies to respond to a change in stimuli without much thought / hesitation — avoids danger and prioritises safety.

16
Q

What is a relay neurone

A

It bypasses the brain/ CNS and goes directly to the motor neurone. (Avoids consciousness)

17
Q

State some examples of reflex actions in the body

A

Breathing, blinking, digesting, etc
All avoid harm / danger

18
Q

Describe the 4-5 stages to a synapse

A

Electrical impulses enter
Neurotransmitters released
Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synapse
These transmitters pass through the opposite neurone, carrying the electric impulse again.
