4.4.2.3 metabolism Flashcards
Define metabolism
The sum of all the chemical reactions in the body in order to maintain life.
What is metabolic rate?
The speed at which chemical reactions occur
What are exothermic reactions?
This is when bonds are made where energy is released upon formation.
What are endothermic reactions?
This is when bonds are broken where energy is needed to break these bonds.
What is fermentation?
The making of beers / wine from yeast which performs anaerobic respiration
What is the word equation for fermentation?
Glucose = ethanol and carbon dioxide
What is the number equation for fermentation?
C6H12O6 = 2C2 H5 OH + 2CO2
People who are more _________ have a higher metabolic rate.
Muscular
What is glucose converted into within humans?
Glycogen ( storage form of glucose )
How is a lipid formed?
1 glycerol molecule + 3 fatty molecules = lipid found in the cell membrane
What are excess proteins broken down into?
The chemical urea, which is then excreted but kidneys.
