4.4.2.2 response to exercise Flashcards
What are the main ways our body responds to exercise?
Breathing faster and deeper
Increased body temperature as energy is being used by muscle contraction.
Aerobic respiration increases as body cells require more oxygen.
Why does heart rate increase during exercise?
To pump oxygenated blood around the body
What is the main problem with the heart carrying oxygen when we are exercising?
Not enough oxygen can be supplied to the muscles, especially if we are exercising hard.
When does anaerobic respiration occur in the body during exercise?
When oxygen cannot be supplied to muscles.
How is lactic acid built up during exercise?
As there is an incomplete oxidation of glucose.
What does lactic acid do to muscles after long periods of vigorous activity?
They start to become fatigued
Define oxygen debt
This is when the body has to produce extra oxygen to deal with the accumulated lactic acid after exercising.
What happens to lactic acid in the liver after being transported there by blood?
It is converted back to glucose in a series of chemical reactions.
What is energy needed for the in human body?
Movement
Homeostasis
Making large molecules rather than smaller
