4.1.2.3 stem cells Flashcards
What are embryonic stem cells?
These are cells that are in an early stage embryo which can turn into anything.
What is a stem cell?
An undifferentiated cell which can give rise to more cells of the same type or differentiate into other cell types.
What are the three type of stem cells found In human bone marrow?
Platelets
Red blood cells
White blood cells
How can leukaemia be treated with bone marrow?
Radiation is done to destroy infected bone marrow.
The patient receives a bone marrow transport from a donor.
The stem cells divide and form new bone marrow. They also differentiate and form blood cells.
What are the two main problems with bone marrow transplanting
The donor must be compatible
The patient may be at risk from passed on viruses in the donors bone marrow
What is therapeutic cloning?
An embryo is produced with the same genes as the patient . Stem cells can be transplanted without being rejected and once inside they can differentiate to replace non working cells.
What are plant stem cells?
Roots and buds contain meristem tissue, the stem cells can become anything throughout a plants lifespan.
What are examples of plant cloning and why may we do this?
We could clone a rare plant from stop it from going extinct.
We could produce more crops for farmers
