4.2.2.2 the heart and blood vessels Flashcards
What is the heart
It is an organ that pumps blood around the body in a double circulatory system
What are the three different type of blood vessel within the body
Arteries, capillaries, veins
What do capillaries transport
Blood, nutrients, and oxygen
What do veins transport
Deoxygenated blood from all body parts to the heart.
What does the right ventricle do
Pumps blood to the lungs
What does the left ventricle do
Pumps blood around the body
What is the vena cava
A vein that travels from the body parts to the heart, this carries deoxygenated blood
What is the aorta
Artery pumps blood from the heart around the body, carries oxygenated blood
What is the pulmonary vein
A vein that travels from the lungs to the heart. Carries oxygenated blood
What is the pulmonary artery
A artery that travels from the heart to the lungs. Carries deoxygenated blood
Explain gas exchange within the lungs
Bronchioles —-> alveolus
Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in alveoli at the end of bronchial tubes. Alveoli are surrounded by capillaries.
Do veins visit or go away
They visit the heart
Do arteries visit or go away
They transport nutrients and oxygen away from the heart
What do capillaries do?
Connect the veins and arteries
What is lumen
Central cavity of a tubular or other hollow structure in an organism / cell
