4.1.2.2 mitosis and the cell cycle Flashcards
What is the cell cycle?
This is when cells have to divide.
What is mitosis?
This is a type of cell division that produces 2 daughter cells, genetically identical to the original cell.
Where does mitosis take place?
In all cells
What is the first stage in mitosis?
The DNA replicates to form two copies of each chromosome. The cell also grows and copies it’s internal structure (mitochondria / ribosomes)
What is the second stage in mitosis?
Mitosis now starts to take place. One set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of a cell. The nucleus also divides.
What occurs in the last stage of mitosis?
The cytoplasm + cell membrane divide to form two identical cells.
When are the three times mitosis takes place?
During growth and development of multicellular organisms
Reparation
During asexual reproduction
