4.1.3.1 diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion
Spreading out of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area or lower concentration. This is randomly distributed.
State facts about diffusion
-happens both in solids and gases
-can move through some cell membranes
-‘semi impermeable’ allowing certain substances to pass through, but not others.
-happens in the human body cells
What is cellular diffusion
Oxygen and glucose travelling to cells - waste product is carbon dioxide.
Explain the factors affecting diffusion.
-the larger the concentration (amount)
-temperature (affect on particles) this increases energy.
-surface area, more area for particles to pass through. I
Explain gas exchange
Some of the substances transported in and out of cells by diffusion are oxygen and carbon dioxide.
What is the waste product for gas exchange
Urea from cells into the blood plasma for excretion in the kidney
A single called organism has a relatively large surface area to volume ratio. This allows sufficient transport of..
Molecules into and out of the cell to meet the needs of the organism.
