- measure around waist at belly button while relaxed
- measure around the hips at largest part of buttocks
- divide the waist by the hip

males < 0.9
females < 0.8
What is a concern for excess fat around the abdomen in males?
can interfere with the liver’s ability to use insulin

after menopause
What is thrifty metabolism?
when a person requires fewer calories than normal to maintain body function
What is set point theory?
states that each of us has a genetically predetermined body weight and that the body will resist change beyond this set point
What is fat cell development?
once a fat cell is formed, it will always be present
Can we get rid of fat cells?
no, we can shrink them but not get rid of them

underweight = <18.5
normal = 18.5-24.9
overweight = 25-29.2
