3.1 Energy Balance Part 2 Flashcards
What is thermogenesis also known as?
nonexercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT)
What is thermogenesis?
ability to regulate body temperature and physical activity that is involuntary
What are examples of NEAT?
fidgeting
maintaining body posture
shivering
What is brown adipose tissue?
fat that metabolized the energy yielding nutrients which results in heat production used by the body
Where is brown adipose tissue mainly found?
infants below collar bone
lean adults
How much percent energy expenditure does physical activity account for?
15-40%
What are the factors that will determine how many calories are expended from physical activity?
body size
fitness level
actual activity
What are the two methods to determine how many calorie a day a body needs?
Direct calorimetry
indirect calorimetry
What is direct calorimetry?
measures the amount of heat given off by the body using an insulated chamber surrounded by a thin layer of water to measure heat emitted by the subject
What is indirect calorimetry?
uses oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output to measure energy expended
What are the formulas that are used to calculate energy expenditure based on?
age
sex
height
weight
How many kcal do men and women require to support body functions?
men = 1kcal/kg/hour
women = 0.9kcal/kg/hour
