26-07 Personnel Post Exposure Decontamination Flashcards
When shall post exposure cleanup be performed?
any time personnel, elements or other articles of PPE become/ suspected of contamination
What is Exposure?
any time personnel/ equipment are subjected to contaminants via emergency incident or training
What is Soiled?
PPE exposed to sweat, mild odours, dust, debris
What is Contaminated by Fire?
PPE exposed to physical, gaseous products of combustion
What is Contaminated by Biological or Chemical products? (3)
PPE exposed to:
- petroleum/ chemical substances, oils
- anatomical tissues/ bodily fluids
- otherwise determined by IC
What is Mitigation?
reduce/ neutralize severity of hazardous exposures
What is Containment?
physically sperating contaminated equipment from environment
What is Decontamination?
the washing, neutralizing, and/ or sterilizing of PPE to return it to service
Whose responsibility is it to initiate decontamination procedures?
each individual or supervisor
What can worn to protect from off-gassing gear if SCBA or F gloves are removed? (2)

2. N95 mask
Wher shall gear be left when assigned to rehab?
in area away from personnel
What is to be avoided for exposed gear that is being worn that may return to hot zone?
using water to wet down PPE
When do personnel report to Decon sector?
when being released from scene
What is Level 1 Decontamination?
applies to training or emergency incidents involving PPE that is soiled but NOT contaminated by fire or chemicl/ biological contaminants
What is Level 2 Decon?
applies to training/ emergency incidents involving fire
Where is Level 2 Decontamination to be completed?
prior to leaving the scene or training site
What is procedure for Level 2 Decon? (4)
- use dry brush to remove debris
- use low pressure water and soap to remove debris
- rinse boots, gloves, helmet, face mask
- doff gear
What is the order of doffing gear? (8)
- remove helmet and place in plastic bag

- jaw
- face areas (nose, eyes, ears)
Where is equipment temporarily stored if contaminated?
bagged and stored in external compartment
How do personnel reduce their personal contamination?
shower within the hour
What is the priority prior to getting equipment and apparatus back in service?
reducing personal contamination by showering with the hour.
What is Level 3 Decontamination?
training or emergency incidents involving biological or chemical contaminants.
