17-04 High Rise Ventilation Flashcards
What SOG is this SOG an extension of?
SOF 17-01 Ventilation
What is an Evacuation Stairwell?
used for evac ops for civilians
What is Operations Stairwell?
utilized for FF ops, unsuitable for civilians
What is Set-up?
2 fans placed in series (one in front of another 1.5- 2m between)
What is Stack Effect (chimney effect)?
movement of air into/ out of buildings, etc resulting from air buoyancy
Where can stack effect occur? (4)
- buildings
- chimneys
- flue gas stacks
- other ocntainers
Why does air buoyancy occur in STack Effect?
occurs due to difference in indoor-to-outdoor air density
How does air buoyancy occur?
results from temperature and moisture differences between indoor and outdoor air density
What are factors causing greater buoyancy force, hence stack effect? (2)
- greater thermal difference
2. height of structure
What does stack effect help drive? (3)
- natural ventilation
- air infiltration
- fires
What is VSO?
Ventilation Sector Officer
What does VSO do?
plans/ coordinates ventilation of structure
What arriving apparatus is expected to begin set-up for ventilating a high-rise (unless otherwise assigned)?
3rd arriving apparatus
Where does all 3rd arriving apparatus personnel set-up?
at exterior exit to Operations Stairwell
What is expectation of 3rd arriving apparatus in regards Entry Control at Hi Rises?
It is not expected that 3rd arriving apparatus should be ECP
Who designates operations Stairwell if not already designated by IC?
VSO
What is to be done if exterior set-up at Ops Stairwell not feasible?
IC informed
How many FF stay at Ops Stairwell exit and what is expected of them? (2)
- 2 FF
2. begin ascent to upper floors
Where do remaining personnel go after Ops Stairwell established?
to set- up Evac Stairwell and mimic Ops Stairwell set-up
What are duties of Ops/ Evac stairwell sectors? (6)
- determine effectiveness of ventilation/ pressurization efforts
- assist/ redirect evacuating occupants
- assist/ rescue found occupants/ fire personnel
- observe heat/ smoke conditons on all floors
- locate exhaust points (roof hatches/ man doors)
- remove immediate smoke from upper stairwells
What is objective of pressurized stairwells?
to prevent further spread of heat/ smoke/ gases into occupied areas.
When is it NOT recommended to further ventilate using pressurized air throughout structure?
if active firefighting is ongoing
What area should be used as exhaust, if possible?
area of origin.
When is at appropriate to begin ventilating? (2)
- fire contained to unit of origin
2. fire deemed under control
