What is the purpose of the Peer Support SOG?

What are examples of Significant Incidents? (9)
- Serious injury/ death of FD member or other emergency personnel
- Mass casualty incidents
- suicide of service member
- serious injury/ death of a civilian resulting from FD operations
- Death or violence of child
- death of patient following extraordinary/ prolonged expenditure of physical/ emotional energy during rescue efforts by FD personnel
- incidents that attreact extremely unusual/ critical news media coverage
- anu ncident that is chatged with emotion
- An incident in which the circumstances were so unusual or sights/ sounds distressing as to produce high level of immediate/ delayed emotional reaction.
What is a crisis?
sudden/ unexpected situation in which one is confronted with circumstances that are outside their usual life experience and outside of their control
What is crisi intervention?
- initial support intended to mitigate and normalize the effects of a crisis.
What is a significant incident?
- challenging events that have the potential to creat significant human distress and can overwhel one’s coping behaviours
Who can contact a member of the PST or EAFP?
- any personnel who feels need for individual assistance

What is Individual Support?
- one-one support available upon request, for any concerns related to variety of stress related topics incl. speciifc incident
What is on-scene/ near scene support?
- support for individuals/ crews ; info sessions conducted shortly asfter incident whereby PST member provides brief review of stress related reactions and self-help tools
What are Information Sessions?
- conducted shortly after incident as informational update on incident. Provides brief review of stress related reactions and self- help tools
What is a CIS Discussion?
- confidential non-evaluative discussion of involvement, thoughts and emotional impact resulting from incident
Within what timeframe is a CIS discussion conducted and where? (2)
- within 8-12 hours of incident

What is included in a CIS discussion?
-education on stress- related reactions and coping skills
How long can a CIS discussion last?
- up to 1 hour

- PST members
What is a CIS debriefing?
- a more in-depth confidential non-evaluative discussion of involvement, thoughts and emotional impact resulting from incident.

- PST members with support of EFAP Mental Health Professional Counselor

- within 24-72 hours of incident at a mutually agreed upon location and time.
What is included in a CIS Debriefing?

- up to 3 hours
