1.7 Flashcards
Define what a synaps is
a site where info. is transmitted from one cell to another, either electrically or chemically
what is electrical synaps?
allows current to flow from one excitable cell to another via low resistance gap junction
what are the characterisctics of electrical synaps?
- very fast
- cardiac muscle and single unit smooth muscle
- bidirectional
- no delay
Gap btw pre and post synaptic cells is called
synaptic cleft
what causes the NT to release?
AP in the presynaptic cell causes Ca++ channels to open -> Ca++ signal -> exocytosis of the NT
change in the membrane potential can be
EPSP
IPSP
what happens to the NT after it finished his job?
enztmatically degraded
diffused away
reuptake
EPSP mV values
0.1-5 mV depolarization for milisec
Glu R
Ionotropic
Metabotropic
Ionotropic Glu R
AMPA (Na+)
NMDA (Na+ and Ca++ more active upon depolarization)
GABA R types
GABA A= ligand gated Cl- channel
GABA B= Gi GPCR (opening of K+ channels)
Define Spatial summation
several different pre-synaptic neurons firing at the same time) at different synaps on the neuron
Define Temporal summation
same pre synaptic neuron fire multiple time in close succession
ACh
Role in the body
- used in the spinal cord neurons to control muscles
- used in many neurons in the brain to regulate memory
- *mostly excitatory
Glu
Role in the body
Most common excitatory NT in the brain
