1
Q
Occurrence and aetiology?
A
Occurrence:
- sporadic
Aetiology:
- Taylorella equigenitalis
- Low resistance
- Equidae are susceptible
2
Q
Epidemiology?
A
Epidemiology:
- Sexually transmitted or with utensils
- Asymptomatic carriers (stallion, mare)
3
Q
Pathogenesis?
A
Pathogenesis
- Colonisation of the genital mucous membranes
- Ascending infection
- Inflammation of the cervix and the uterus, salpingitis
- Disappears from the uterus within 3-4 weeks
- A part of the mares remain carriers
- Stallions can carry asymptomatically for a longer time
4
Q
Clinical signs?
A
Clinical signs
- Uterine discharge
- Repeat breeders
- No signs in stallions
5
Q
Diagnosis?
A
Diagnosis
- Epidemiology – clinical signs
- Diagnosis of the disease: detection of the agent - isolation of the agent (uterus, cervix), PCR
- Diagnosis of carriers
o Detection of the agent: isolation of the agent: clitoris, praeputium, urethra, semen; PCR
o Detection of antibodies: ELISA, CFT (limited diagnostic value)

Treatment
- Isolation of infected animals
- Uterine wash, wash of the genital mucous membranes
- Ampicillin, neomycin, polymyxin, nitrofurantoin
- Disinfection
- Antibiotic ointment (nitrofurantoin)
7
Q
Prevention?
A
Prevention
- Prevention of the introduction of infected animals:
- bacteriological examination before mating
