11.9 Active Load Control Flashcards
When flying, the aerodynamic loads on the wing interact with what?
The wing structure itself
To maximise performance, what are wings designed to have?
High aspect ratios
What are two aeroelastic load controls?
Manoeuvred load control (MLC) and Gust load alleviation (GLA)
How can MLC and GLA benefit the aircraft?
Weight saving and increased wing spans
How does manoeuvre load control (MLC) work?
Use the wing control surfaces (aileron and lift spoilers) to move the centre of lift inboard during manoeuvres, such that the wing root bending moment, a measure of wing structural loading, is reduced
How does gust load alleviation (GLA) work?
It is a control system fitted to some Fly-by-wire (FBW) aircraft that reduces the effect of gust loads on the aircraft by deflecting control surfaces such as ailerons, rudder and elevators
Which of the flight control surface is used during gust load alleviation (GLA)?
Ailerons
Which of the flight control surface is used during manoeuvre load control?
Ailerons
