11.3 Flight Control Surfaces Construction And Attachments Flashcards
What are flight control devices?
They are aerodynamic devices that allow the flight crew to adjust and control the aircraft’s flight attitude
What are the two types of flight controls?
Primary and secondary
Where do the ailerons attach to?
Wing rear spars
Where do the elevators attach to?
Horizontal stabiliser rear spar
Where do the rudders attach to?
Vertical stabiliser (fin) rear spars
Where do spoilers attach to?
Wing rear spars
Where do flap tracks attach to?
Wing rear spars
Where do leading edge slat tracks attach to?
Wing front spars
Why are control surfaces attached to the trailing edge of a wing?
they are Fitted with suitable attachment points
what are spoiler panels made from ?
upper and lower metallic or composite skin with a honeycomb sandwich layer
how do spoilers pivot ?
at a centre hinge area with a bracket for the hydraulic actuator
when slats are retracted, where do they sit ?
flush with the skin
how do slats retract and extend ?
they run on tracks moved mechanically or hydraulically that run inwards and outwards
how are slats constructed?
in a similar method to the wing construction of the aircraft
what is important to consider when creating slats ?
they need to be lightweight and strong
