11.1 Drag Inducing Devices Flashcards
Are drag devices primary or secondary flight controls?
Secondary flight controls
What are drag devices used for?
They are used to increase drag in order to slow the aircraft down or to dump lift
What are the two main means of inducing drag?
Spoilers and speed brakes
Why are air brakes and spoilers different?
Air brakes raise drag and make no difference to lift, spoilers however decrease lift to drag ratio and require a higher angle of attack to sustain lift resulting in higher stall speed
Where are the spoilers found
On the upper surface of the wing
How are spoilers are attached to the wing?
Hinged
What is the function of a spoiler?
To increase drag to augment a controlled decent
Depending on aircraft what are the three functions of a spoiler?
Flight spoilers (speed brakes), ground spoilers (lift dumpers), roll spoilers
How do flight spoilers work?
The wing panels are symmetrically extended by pilot selection through a speed brake lever on the centre console of the flight deck
While airborne is normally limited to an angle, while in the air is this less or more than on the ground.
?
Less
What are flight spoilers position when they are armed?
Down until the aircraft lands
During the landing ground roll or during a rejected take off how much are the spoilers extended?
Extended to their maximum angle
What is the primary purpose of the ground spoilers?
To maximise the wheel brake efficiency by spoiling or dumping lift generated by the wing and thus forcing the full weight of the aircraft onto the landing gear, which improved the effectiveness of the wheel brakes for deceleration
What are roll spoilers used for?
Used in conjunction with ailerons to enhance roll control and are often referred to as spoiler ones.
What must happen to use a roll spoilers?
It can only be up on one wing
