11.2b Surface Cleaning Flashcards
What are the three methods of cleaning the exterior of an aircraft ?
- wet washing
- dry washing
-polishing (hand and mechanical)
What will a wet wash remove from an aircraft?
Oil, grease, carbon deposits and most dirt.
What will a dry wash remove ?
Aircraft film, dust, small accumulations of dirt and soil
When may a dry wash be used ?
When the use of liquids is neither desirable or practical
What can a dry wash be done with ?
Dry Mops or cloths
What is polishing and what does it do ?
Usually performed once the surfaces have been cleaned , and restores brightness and colour to surfaces of the aircraft. Polishing can also remove oxidation and corrosion
Why is it important to use approved solvents or detergents when cleaning an aircraft ?
They may create undesirable effects in materials, such as hydrogen embrittlement in steels. Always refer to the AMM for guidance
What may occur when undiluted solvents come in contact with acrylic windows ?
Crazing is likely to occur
In areas of high contamination, what can be used to clean them ?
Stronger contaminants
When a runway is Iced over, chemical salts may be used to melt the ice, what must be done ASAP after exposure to this ?
Contaminated areas should be washed with clean water
What must acrylic windows be washed with ?
Soap or mild detergent in warm water
How can an acrylic window be polished ?
Plastic polish vacant be used and finished with an anti static polish or cloth
Where is radioactive contamination most common and how is it monitored and controlled ?
Usually confined to aircraft the fly above the stratosphere, monitered with a Geiger counter and controlled with regular cleaning
How can you clean the interior of an aircraft?
Special attention to areas of likely spillages, a hoover can be used to remove dirt however if oil or grease spillages happen, a cleaner recommended by the manufacturer can be used.
What must be avoided when using a cleaner to remove oil or grease stains ?
Soaking the fabric or padding
